Jack stands nervously at the dock, glancing up at Bill every once and awhile for reassurance, Bill looks proud of himself, and he should be, he stands tall in his Navy uniform, the very image of the perfect sailor, unlike Jack, who slumps and picks at the fabric of his brocade coat, and wishes he was anywhere but here.
“I don’t understand it, Jack” Bill whispers to him as the Captain continues to address the crowds, “your father was a pirate, this should come naturally to you.”
“Yes, he was.” Jack sniffed, “And my mother was a whore, so I take it that you’re implying-“
“Oh shut up!” Bill grinned, still staring forward, pretending to listen to the Captains meaningless speech about Britain’s pride and strength of the nation, “You know what I mean… and actually,” Bills grin widened some more, “You are quite good at lying on your back.”
Jack kicks him hard in the calf and scowls, Bill bits his bottom lip; from the pain and to stop him from laughing, he nudges Jack with his elbow and smiles at him cheekily, Jack tries his hardest but gives in and lets Bill get a smirk out of him.
Jack stares at the grey, menacing water and shivers.
“I’m the youngest here, Bill, maybe I should just go back to the orphanage-“
“What, and get sent to work on the fish market or one of the factories or the bloody smithy, and be trapped in London for the rest of your life?”
“I like London.” Jack mumbles, glaring at the wooden floor that keeps them but inches away from that murky deep.
“I’m only a year older, and those boys there, they can only be a couple of years older than me, about 20.”
“There’s a big difference between 16 and 20.”
“Jack stop complaining, you’ll get to see the world.”
“Why couldn’t you have wanted to be a farmer, or go to university?”
Bill merely snorted in response.
Jack sighed and looked up at his soon to be master, his speech was winding down now and soon they would be boarding the ship that would take them to the new world.
“You’re only doing this so you can see Nancy again. It will never work out Bill, she’s too good for you.”
“Yes, but I might get to see her, and her parents might not mind me if they see I’m in the Navy.”
Bill looked so hopeful, Jack could hardly bare it, but what could he do except go with him?
“You’re kidding aren’t you? As soon as you see you’re in the Caribbean they’ll send her back home to England.”
